ACF and PGI Create Alternative Governance and Racial Justice Tool Kit

January 19th, 2022
Here at ACF, our board and staff are committed to incorporating collaborative leadership practices and principles of racial justice into the work that we do as a foundation and wish to share this knowledge more broadly with the community.

It is with that in mind, that we partnered with the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy's public good Initiative (PGI) to develop a resource called, Alternative Governance and Racial Justice: A toolkit for Philanthropic organizations. PGI is a student-run policy consultancy at the University of Toronto and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the brilliant team of Priyanka Patel, Evelyn Chong and Chloe Hinds. Special miigwech to our co-Chair Jess Bolduc for helping to steward this collaboration.

When philanthropy tools are used to address racial inequity, we are able to then use philanthropy - and the flow of wealth and resources that it brings - as a tool for addressing racial injustice systematically. The theories, practices, and tools in this document can be used to help us decolonize wealth and work towards justice, aiding in a sector shift for Black, Indigenous, and communities of Colour.

This document explains key terms for better understanding, theories on systems change, inverting power, key practices on the importance of restructuring donor relationships, community collaboration, and ensuring the framework of an organization holds its members accountable.

We hope you take the time to review this toolkit and find value in applying it to the work you do within your community!

Chi miigwech, thank you again to all involved at PGI in the creation of this resource.
